Mechanical Music in Animated Movies
By Jim Canavan

I just received and screened a 16 mm print of a Columbia Pictures 1938
Krazy Kat cartoon, entitled "Lone Mountie." (Film collecting is yet
another hobby of mine, in addition to mechanical music and toy trains.)

Krazy Kat and his girlfriend (yes, by the 1930's, Krazy had changed
from a female Kat to a Mickey Mouse-like male!) roll the villain up
in a long carpet runner, and then shoot the carpet full of holes.
Krazy then takes the rolled up rug, and sticks in into the top of a
player piano. In the final scene, Krazy and his girlfriend sit at the
piano, sing, and pump it, as the "roll" plays! Yikes -- this has got
to be the most bizarre appearance of mechanical music in a film!
