Donating Player Pianos
By Roger Waring

Am I alone in finding the subtle hints of impending destruction of
unsellable players a mite objectionable? It is of course very sad
that a player may well be going that way, but resorting to a form of
emotional blackmail will not help. A more realistic value might do
better.

I would respectfully suggest that $500 for a fairly ordinary player
in poor condition, and in need of comprehensive restoration, is not
realistic. Especially when transport costs are added to the purchase
price. Even the alternative of "best offer" is not likely to extract
an acceptable figure from a potential buyer -- if I offered $100 this
would probably be regarded as an insult.

I agree with the philosophy of donating unwanted players to care
centres. This is a very good way of keeping them in use, and with the
mix of talent that older folk can bring to the task, even restoration
may well not be beyond them. I entirely agree that they are likely to
be the most popular item in the recreation room.

I have done a few mini-concerts for such day centres and know from
experience how much this form of entertainment is appreciated. Even
when the fingers are gnarled with age and unable to cope with live
playing, anyone who can walk can get a tune out of a well-regulated
player. I have this crazy ambition to put players into every UK Youth
Hostel.

I just need a lottery win to achieve my dream!
