Flexible Joints in Gulbransen Player Action
By Craig Brougher

I wanted to amend my statement about using felt punchings for the
flexible connectors on the Gulbransen. I should have said "action
felt" punchings.

The difference is that action felt is woven felt, designed to take a
beating for the life of the piano. It is the same felt used on the
piano action stickers, for example. That's the part that the key keeps
pressing to play the note.

Since the flexible pads are only under compression, no delaminating
force exists to pull the felt apart. So even ordinary felt would work,
but would pack down too much over time and you'd have some lost motion.
Action felt won't compress any more than leather will, in this
situation.
