The aspect of children and mechanical music is an interesting one.
Most mechanical music conventions and large gatherings seem to
discourage children from attending, either because of the schedule,
the toured homeowner's request, or the price of registration.  You can
understand where some collectors would be aghast at having children,
especially unattended, run around a collection of fine musical boxes
or, for that matter, a recently and well-finished reproducing piano.

One aspect of our collecting hobby, however, is well suited for
children and should be included for every family member, and that is
the organ rally.  The rallies are outdoors, usually with other
activities in the area and a great way of introducing children to the
mechanical aspect of music.  How many times have you seen children
allowed to crank an organ or standing in front of a band organ?

I have always believed that these events should be promoted for the
family as well as for the avid collector.  As Chairman of the Organ
Rally Committee for years (Mid-Am, MBSI) I always strived to do that.
I am sure most MMDr's are aware of when and where the rallies are but
if they are not, I invite them to look at the MBSI or AMICA bulletins
or check in with the COAA's "Carousel Organ" for the lastest
information on listings of organ rallies for 2000.

We definately need to encourage children to get interested -- after
all, some of us are getting older!
