Children and Mechanical Music
By Bob Taylor

Perhaps overlooked in this recent discussion, was the wonderful
event involving the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra on its first
international tour, December 1985. The main program of that tour was
in Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, in which the Orchestra performed with
pianolists Rex Lawson and Denis Hall. Additionally, Percy Grainger
performed with the group by Duo-Art reproducing piano.

With the help of the Chicago Chapter of AMICA, the Player Piano Group
and Peter Davis who supplied the Duo-Art player, this unique event
exposed over 100 youth musicians in the orchestra to both the Duo-Art
reproducing piano and the Pianola. Of course there were many youth
in the audience at the main concert and smaller concerts preceding it.
A review by MMDer Dan Wilson was published in the PPG Bulletin,
January, 1986.

Who knows, maybe some of these musicians now as young adults have
started collecting mechanical music.
