Music for Halloween: "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"
By Robbie Rhodes

Having a Halloween party? Here's a fine performance which the
visiting hobgoblins and witches can pump at your player piano:

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (Paul Dukas, 1897), QRS XP-163,
played by QRS staff artist Rudy Martin.

The recitation printed on the roll is very entertaining. It's a
humorous translation by Joseph Auslander (1897-1970) of Goethe's
original poem, "Der Zauberlehrling", in stylized Victorian English.
Auslander was the first Poet Laureate of the USA (1937-1941), and
Consultant in English Poetry at Library of Congress.

A MIDI file of the scherzo "L'apprenti sorcier" may be downloaded
