Substitute for Open Cup Mercury Switch

I suppose one could just fit a relay and have the mercury switch
control the relay.  The current through the switch will then be very
low and there won't be much arcing.  The rest of the arcing could
probably be filtered with a suitable capacitor.  This would be a
reversible change and should not impact on the originality of the
instrument.
