Cleaning Music Box Discs
By Ralph Schultz

Steve Greatrex asked about cleaning music box discs. The system I use
is to spray the disc with "409" cleaner and then use #0000 steel wool
on the front side, being careful not to remove the lettering. If badly
rusted then go lightly over the lettering, but the rest of the disc you
need not worry about.

For the back side, get yourself a whitewall tire brush, brass bristle.
Spray the disc with the "409" cleaner and then use the brush crossways,
or any which way you want to; it does not bend the projections. When
finished, rinse under hot water then dry with air hose if you have one.
If no air hose then towel dry as best as you can.

When they are dry apply "Kotton Klenser" old fashioned furniture
polish: this is lemon oil and beeswax. This will be messy but don't
worry about it, it can be applied with a cheapo paint brush. Place the
disc somewhere to dry for about three or four days and it will leave a
film of wax that is not oily or greasy but will protect the disc from
finger prints and prevent rusting.

"Kotton Klenser" may be found in antique stores. I buy mine from The
Time Saves, http:// www.timesavers.com/
