Electronic Tuning Devices
By John A. Tuttle

Hi All, Perhaps I'm just 'out of the loop' or 'behind the times' with
regards to electronic tuning devices. Is there an electronic tuning
device that tells the tuner when he has a unison correctly tuned?

How about one that correctly interprets the overtones in the sub-bass
register of a spinet piano? How about one that interprets the
overtones in a piano with very flat hammers? (Especially those in
the treble region.)

Mind you, I use an electronic tuning aid, but it's just a reference
tool, not an end-all or be-all. I believe that any tuner 'worth his
salt' does most of his tuning (over 50%) by ear. And considering that
the average piano has some 250 strings, I'd venture to say that on
average at least two-thirds of the strings are tuned aurally.

So, does a piano tuner have to have good hearing? Personally, I think
that's a no-brainer: _Yes!_

Also, I'd be curious to hear from piano tuners about whether they
ever spend the time to teach a customer how to tell if a temperament
is correctly set. What's the old saying; "An educated consumer is our
best customer..."

Musically,
