Black Finish on Player Piano Action Parts

Where did I read somewhere that this was originally coal dust mixed in
with some kind of clear finish?  I do agree it's an unusual substance.

In the shop, here, we just use semi-gloss black lacquer, which is very
forgiving.  If it needs to be shiny, we clear coat it after.
