Ampico Roll Numbers
By Spencer Chase

Greetings,

I have started on the scanning of Ampico rolls. Many of them are in
less than perfect condition. It would be convenient to automatically
remove the holes that are found on the edges, but Ampico B rolls have
one extra track on each side. I would like to automatically remove
garbage in the positions of the Amplifier and Sub-intensity, but only
if the roll is not a B roll. When playing rolls with bad margins on an
A piano, the Amplifier and Sub-intensity codes will be ignored, but I
have a B which will do strange things when it sees these.

Hopefully there is an exact roll number after which rolls were coded in
anticipation of the B release for each the Classical and Popular series.
This would make my job much easier than trying to recognize B rolls by
content. Of course, I can examine each roll and sort it myself, but I
am trying to have a computer program do it. If anyone knows the cutoff
numbers, or if they know that there is really no exact number, please
let me know. If there is a fuzzy period, I can have the computer mark
the roll as being in this period and decide only about the clear cases.
So that would be useful information too.

Best regards,
Spencer Chase
