Mechanical Music for Teenagers
By Jim Neher

As a school teacher in music (grade 6-12), I believe there are no
instant results in trying to bring them something new, especially if
it's old. Some will mock it, some will ignore it, and a few will
grow to love it forever. We must be content with that.

As to current "classics", "Linus and Lucy" (the "Peanuts" theme song)
is the most powerful single piece around, for all ages. It could be
arranged for orchestrion very effectively. (Or, it could be arranged
horribly. Kids can tell an incompetent arrangement as easily as adults
can, but they aren't as polite about it.) "Surfin' U.S.A." is worth a
try also. Sure-fire favorites like "Stars and Stripes Forever" and
"Over the Rainbow" should also be used.

To try to make arrangements of current rock hits would be a mistake
unless the arrangement is deliberately tongue-in-cheek, and you are
willing to scrap it after a year goes by.

The real challenge in music education is to develop a deep appreciation
for quality. This is a slow process but immensely rewarding.
