Sealing Leather Pouches
By Peter Phillips

Now that vinyl and other synthetics are definitely out as pouch
materials, I wonder what contributors might say about leather sealants.
I have examined the MMD Archives and find suggestions for sealants
range from egg white to silicone glues. In the past, I have tried
rubber solutions and silicone sealants. Rubber sealants apparently
have a 10 to 15 year life, although there could be a specific brand
someone might recommend that has a longer life.

On the recommendation of a local restorer, I have also used a watery
mixture of Dow silicone glue and turps to seal the primaries in my
Ampico. This sealant seems to be holding well. I now want to replace
the primary valve leather and therefore need to effectively seal it.

Can anyone suggest the best way of sealing pouch leather? I have not
yet decided on the type of leather (kangaroo, etc.), so any suggestions
will be gratefully received.

With thanks,
Peter Phillips
