Replacing Corrosive Leather Nuts with Nylon Nuts

Bruce Duncan wrote in the 06.10.04 MMD that "no one responded with
personal experience in using the nylon nuts in place of leather."

Bruce, I started using nylon nuts in place of leather back in the
70s, for pipe organ work.  The only difficulty I found is that when
initially installing the nut, one must remember that nylon doesn't
"give" as much as leather; so if the hole is too small, there is a
danger of the nut seizing on the thread and breaking the wire.  I use
a proper-size drill, held in a pin vise, to enlarge the hole if I have
only one or two to drill, or I put the drill in the press if I have a
bunch.

The only failures I've found were the earliest ones I used on my
Autopiano action, which had the hole too small, causing some of
the nuts to split over time.  The later, drilled ones have held fine
since 1974.
