Mechanical Music in the Movies
By Marc Goodman

I just saw a famous film, Jean Renoir's "The Rules of the Game",
France, 1939. (It's a newly restored print; I do not know if the
older prints have all the items in it!) In the film, one of the main
characters is rich and lives in a large home and collects mechanical
musical instruments! So you can see and hear: a reproducing grand
(the roll is above the keyboard) playing Saint-Saens "Danse Macabre",
various automatons and mechanical birds as well a very large band
organ!!

Best,
Marc Goodman, Cleveland, Ohio
