Pipe Organ Blower Motor Problem
By Bruce Newman

Dear MMD, I'm hoping someone can give me some advice on how to wire
my pipe organ blower. When I bought the organ it was already in
storage so I didn't have the benefit of seeing how the blower motor
was wired to the automatic starter control.

The blower was made by the British Organ Blowing Co. and it has
a single phase 220V motor running on 60 HZ. The organ was previously
installed and running in Southern California. The automatic starter
unit was made by Allen-Bradley.

The starter has three terminals for the line voltage. I connected one
of the hot leads to L1, the neutral to L2, and the other hot lead to
L3. It also has three terminals to connect the three leads that come
from the blower motor. T1 and T3 looked larger and heavier duty than
T2 so I connected the red motor lead to T1, the black motor lead to T3
and the white motor lead to T2.

When I energize the relay in the automatic starter, the motor turns
on and comes up to speed but then turns off after a few seconds.
The starter has two heater coils that seem to be heating up and throwing
some kind of internal safety switch that shuts off the power.

Any advice as to what I'm doing incorrectly here would be most
appreciated!

Regards,
Bruce Newman - from the (now) sunny Oregon Coast
