Memories of Hathaway and Bowers

In the 1960s we lived just a few miles from the Hathaway and Bowers
showroom and I remember visiting there quite often, especially after
I picked up a 19-1/8" Symphonium on a business trip to England. It
needed discs, as all that I got with the instrument were badly rusted
and many of the projections were broken off.

I asked if I could borrow some discs of the same size to copy, and was
allowed to take maybe a dozen of them on the condition that I would
also make a copy for them. I made a punch jig that punched a single
projection at a time, all on a given diameter, then moving out to the
next diameter. I could punch (copy) a disc in less than three hours,
one at a time. I still have the punch unit, and have used it only
a couple of times since then.
