Duo-Art Roll Tracking Problem
By Tom Hutchinson

Hi MMD, I have a Steinway XR Duo-Art and it simply does not tear up
rolls! It is my strongly considered opinion that at least 90% of
tracking problems -- rolls tearing up on reroll, etc. -- are not the
piano's fault.

I have an article coming out in the next AMICA Bulletin (July/Aug)
where I discuss piano roll restoration and this problem extensively.
In the MMD of 09.09.10 Joel Clusky discuses the issue and I believe
correctly identifies the cause. I am certain that his approach will
work but with all due respect to Joel his solution is time-consuming
and labor intensive.

The simple solution is to simply put sufficient number of doubled-up
rubber bands or a large 'O' ring on the post of the left flange, i.e.,
get that flange away from the paper!

Old Bakelite flanges tend to warp. Examine them carefully and replace
them where there is any tendency for them to impede the paper on
playing or reroll.

I'm not particularly concerned about introducing non-original materials
to the roll. I feel that the main purpose of roll restoration is to
get the roll playing again so it can be enjoyed and perhaps scanned for
posterity.
