Rarity of Hupfeld and Ampico Rolls
By Bob Fitterman

I stupidly omitted some information about the Hupfeld roll. Here's the
complete information on the box label:

  Hupfeld 50317
  Sonata No. 7
  a-moll - la mineur - a minor
  Allegro
  W. A. Mozart
  Ludwig Wambold

The leader is completely intact and the markings are consistent with
the box. At the top left of the label "88" is printed in a box. At the
top right, "mQO". These markings don't appear on the leader.

The roll has a series of black dots which alternate from the left to
right side of the roll, generally forming a vertical line about 2.8
inches (7 cm) from the right margin and about 3 inches (7.5 cm) from
the left margin of the roll, but having straight lines that connect
them from one side to the other. I assume they might indicate pedaling.

I assume it's only the first movement since it's marked Allegro. So
here's one strange things, now that I've done a little more digging.
Mozart's Sonata No. 7 is in C major, the 8th is in a-minor. Listening
to a recording of the 8th Sonata and looking at the beginning of the
roll (my only piano is a Disklavier), it's clear to me it's the 8th and
not the 7th! This is even weirder than I'd thought it would be.

I also noticed that in MMD 2009.04.08 that John Phillips was looking
for a copy of Wambold's signature. I'll scan this later in the week and
get it off to him.
