The task of organizing the piano roll collection has always been
foreboding.  And while I think I have a lot of rolls, I've seen
enough comments to know there are those with several times the
size of my not quite 1,000-roll collection.  Cataloguing aside, the
chore of assigning a spot for each roll is my current consideration.
As it turns out, my roll rack is 29 shelves high, as that is how
much space there is between the floor and the ceiling.

I have chosen to designate each shelf with a letter, which makes it
convenient to call the last three AA, BB, and CC.  Then, I use a
number, starting from the left hand side.  So the very topmost left
hand roll is A1, for example.  As it turns out, for various reasons,
it sometimes makes sense to put a roll in a different position than
where it used to be.  So, marking the boxes permanently with their
position (letter, number) turns out not to be the best possibility.

I have pondered for some time on how to affix ID tags to the boxes
in a way which will make them reliably affixed, yet easy to change.
I think I have a solution.

The plan is to glue a tiny bit of Velcro, say, a 3/8-inch square, to
the corner of each box, and to make ID tags to fit them.  While it
seems less than ideal to affix anything permanently to the box, I can't
think of another solution which makes it simple to know where each one
goes just by looking at them.  So, at this point, I'm wondering how
others have addressed this problem.
