Mechanical Music in the Movies
By Art Reblitz

The fairground organ heard in the street scene in Martin Scorsese's
wonderful movie "Hugo" (2011) is the 66-key Limonaire organ in the
Sanfilippo Collection. A few months before the movie opened, the
production company sent a crew to Sanfilippo's to record "Radetzky
March" written by Johann Strauss Sr. in 1848. The recording was done
by Josh Richter of Victorian Recording, Barrington, Illinois, with
assistance from Marty Persky and Greg Leifel (director of the
Sanfilippo Foundation), and final mixing by the film's audio crew.
If you stay for the credits, you'll see this acknowledgment:

MARCHE DE RADETZKY/ Composed by Johann Strauss Sr./ Produced
by Doug Adams/ Courtesy of Jasper and Marian Sanfilippo and
the Sanfilippo Foundation. Recorded from a 1908 Limonaire
Orchestrophone - Style 250, built in Paris, France.

"Hugo" is a must-see for anyone who likes antiques, mechanical things,
enchanting stories, and absolutely stunning cinematography.
