Taylor-Aeolian Player System at Sydney University
By John Weismantel

Hello fellow MMD-ers. In MMD 450423 Peter Phillips reports:

"The Sydney university carillon is a rather sad case. Much of
the mechanics resides at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney... "

Unless there was another carillon somewhere at Sydney University,
I can verify that the carillon in the quadrangle clock tower is very
much alive and kicking as of this last weekend.

As part of our ANZAC Day celebrations (and usually every Sunday from
1400 hrs to 1445 hrs) a pleasing variety of music was heard. I was
priveleged to again visit the clavier room and belfry and spent some
time talking with carillonist Lucy Koe.

The carillon is by John Taylor & Co (Loughborough, England) and
I believe has been only hand-played since its installation and
dedication on 25th April, 1928. There is certainly no evidence that
I can see of a player system having been removed, although the
clavier was replaced in 1977.

The book "Bells of Rememberance" (ISBN 0 86758 495 5) makes no mention
of a player system, although I have not finished reading all of it yet.

As always, I am happy to be corrected if anyone has more accurate
information.

Best regards from chilly and damp Sydney, Australia.

John Weismantel
