Speed Of Rotary Vacuum Pumps
By Scotty Greene

There was a recent post on MMD asking about proper speed for rotary
pumps [171121 MMDigest].

On several machines that we have worked on, where the roll speed was
set at the lower end of the range, we have concluded that this was done
in order to change pulley ratios to speed up the pump to compensate for
leaks in the system. In each case when we fixed the leaks we could
reduce the pump speed to allow the roll drive to be set in the middle
of the adjustment range.

I just checked our Seeburg KT and that pump runs about 118 strokes
per minute. The roll speed is set in the top of the adjustable range.
On the other hand, our Seeburg K, which has a lower demand for vacuum,
runs at close to 160 strokes per minute. There the roll speed is about
as slow as the adjustment allows.

My take from this exercise is that we need to schedule the Seeburg K
for maintenance, as somewhere in the system there is probably a leak.
