Black Finish on Player Piano Action Parts
By Craig Smith

Hi, Jim Weir wrote in 171129 MMDigest that he needs gloss black
brushing paint to finish the interior furniture of a music box.
I believe an appropriate process is to dye the wood black with black
alcohol dye, apply black shellac made with that black alcohol, top
coat with straight shellac, and then finish by using shellac to
French Polish the surface.

I am confused by a term used by David Evans of the Nickelodeon Museum.
I thought that "French Polish" was a term used to describe the
_process_ of applying the top coat(s) of shellac to a piano or a music
box or whatever. I wonder what is actually in the can of "black French
polish as used by piano refinishers".
