Decap "Reed Box" Saxophone
By Dennis Steckley

[ Ref. Christian Tedesco in 210114 MMDigest ]

Mr. Tedesco's post was fascinating (although to my ears the saxophone
sound in the first video was awful!). But the "reed box" idea reminded
me that some pipe organ builders (particularly Wicks, but there were
others) used a reed box in smaller instruments as the bottom octave of
a 16' Bourdon.

Since the longest pipe in that octave would be eight feet in speaking
length, using the reed box made for a more compact instrument with no
mitering of Bourdon pipes. These boxes are not loud, but sound very
good in smaller spaces.

Like the box Mr. Tedesco describes, the box is sealed with only an
input for the wind supply. The ones on pipe organs are free reeds.
