You might be interested to know that I have built the roll reader and translator programs you proposed, pretty much along the lines you suggested. The entire process does a very fine job of translating piano rolls to MIDI. If there are any rolls that interest you in particular, I would be happy to scan them for you and translate them to MIDI. The resulting files are small, and are easily transferred from one place to another by attaching them as files to e-mail.
