Rachmaninoff on Midi Disks
By Tom Steuer

I have just received the new "Rachmaninoff: The Complete Recordings"
for Disklavier (and Piano Disc) from Live Performance. This is an
outstanding job by Wayne Stahnke, as always, and it includes 35 player
piano roll performances that Rachmaninoff made for Ampico.

It's a double-disc set, available from Majestic Piano Works, 22193
Sherman Way, Canoga Park, CA 91303. Price is $59.50 plus shipping and
handling and tax.

I think that only Midi is offered at this time, and I know it works on
the Disklavier, therefore, also on the PianoDisc. It sounds like dour
old Rachmaninoff himself is sitting at my piano. (Incidentally, he
finished his life not far from my home, in Beverly Hills back in 1943.)

I only wish that Rachmaninoff had recorded more pieces for Wayne to
transfer to MIDI format!

Tom Steuer

[ Wayne greatly appreciates that Rachmaninoff made identical audio
[ recordings of many of the pieces issued as reproducing rolls. He
[ notes that Rachmaninoff could replicate the timing of some pieces
[ to within a few seconds. -- Robbie
