Re: Optical Scanners for Music Box Disks
By Jack Kane

-- [ From: John C. Kane * EMC.Ver #2.5.1 ] --

I had also spoken with a photodiode company here in Texas and they
recommended something called the "pill" diodes that were used to read
the old computer cards we used in school (yes, I'm now showing my age!)
Anyway, he said that he would get back with me next week about the
possibility of doing this. All I want to know relative to the disc is
the information to plug into a MIDI file such as cake walk -- I don't
intend to hear the disc while it's being read (although that would be
nice.) Robbie and I have been discussing the scanning of a 9" Stella
disc utilizing a particular kind of photographic paper, which I am
pursuing. My sights are still set on the larger discs. I am told
Dwight Porter, Patch Pierce and Lester Jones all use a "laser scanner"
to read discs (Lester has 100+ types of discs he sells!) so the trick
is finding the supplier of the photodiodes or scanner and getting the
software interface for the MIDI file.
