Seek Optical Roll Scanning System
By John Kelsey

What is the current optical piano roll scanning state of the art?
I have done an extensive Internet search for information regarding
optical roll scanning technology. It appears to me that very little
has been published in several years.

I have hundreds of original Duo-Art and Ampico rolls that I would
like to scan while they are still in excellent condition. Can anyone
point me to a high quality system? Because of the potential scale
of this project, I would like to be able to do the scanning myself.

[ Four techniques are in use today to read the music roll data for
[ making roll copies and for generating MIDI signals for storage and
[ later playback: (a) pneumatic reading, (b) optical reading using
[ discrete photo-detectors, (c) optical reading using a line scan CCD
[ camera, and (d) optical reading using a CIS array. Each technology
[ has its own advocates and pros & cons. See the articles in the
 [ recent AMICA Bulletin Vol. 57 No. 2 - March/April 2019. -- Robbie
