Hello and Piano Questions
By Moira Tuffs

Hi there,

I hope you can put up with some newbie questions, because I am now the
proud owner of a DUNBAR (Chicago) player piano, Number 107827.

The player part does not work, so I have been told. I have taken the front
cover off, and can see that what appear to be bellows work if you push the
crank arms up and down. They are on the right hand side as you face the
piano. The chain to various gears is complete, and appears to go to a cog
on the cylinder part, which I assume would rotate. I hope this description
is meaningful to someone! The only part that appears to be missing is what
looks like an old rubber hosepipe on the far right hand side, and is
broken off about half way up.

There are a couple of keys at the extremities that don't work, but I
haven't investigated these further yet. The rest of the keys have a
moderate action -- not brand new, but not as sloppy as my Grandma's
piano that I learn't on. (It was built in the 1890's, and had had 6
grand-children learn on it before me!)

I have briefly scanned the Digest for books and info, but I hope someone
can enlighten me as to what I have got myself into. :) I am hoping to
get this back into working order whilst learning an awful lot about these
machines!

Any tips, pointers will really be appreciated, and if anyone is in the
Portland (Oregon, USA) area you are most welcome to come and see!

Many, many thanks in advance for your help,

Moira
