Ed Freyer's Perforator
By Andy LaTorre

The mention of Ed Freyer's roll perforator in last evenings MMD reminded
me of the time I visited Ed some 20 or more years ago. I was very
interested in perforators, just having understood the operation of the
interposer, a device which is put between the punch and the cam when one
wants to actuate the punch. This action is performed by a small solenoid
or bellows and has no relation to the punching force. As I said, this
fascinated me, a young tool and die designer.

I had thoughts about building a small real-time perforator for a 2-inch
door-bell organ operated by adding machine paper roll. I made the reader
and organ but punching the paper with a single punch hand-operated device
was extremely tedious and boring.

Anyway, I took many (10?) black & white pictures of the perforator with
Ed's permission. One or two of them showed Ed at work. Ed impressed me
with his knowledge and his desire to share his knowledge. I appreciated
it at the time and have learned from him.

So now I will also share. I still have the photos (somewhere), and I am
willing to give them away to anyone with a convincing enough story.
Although I do not intend to build any perforators, I do enjoy reading the
stories of other builders and the problems and solutions faced by them.
A vicarious experience, I admit, but one can't experience everything.
