US Music Roll Numbering Scheme
By Frank Himpsl

In reference to Mike Walter's question regarding the unknown US Music
Roll (#22326), to my knowledge this number does not correspond with any
of the series known to have been issued by US Music Roll Co.

US used numbering in the 28,000 and 29,000 series for early hand-played
rolls without lyrics. The same rolls were also issued as 38,000 and
39,000 series equivalents when lyrics were stenciled thereon.
However, as far as I'm aware there never was a 22,000 series.

If Mike's source for the number information comes from a stamping
either at the END of the roll (on upper roll surface) or on the roll
leader (underneath), I would speculate that the roll is actually on
one of the Aeolian labels, or on the gray Full Scale label.

The numbering systems used on these are very confusing, but I know for
a fact that both labels used a 22,000 series. I have some sketchy
catalog information on these, and will check through it, but it's
unlikely to be complete enough to pin this down.

(Mike, if the piece is in the ragtime or popular music idiom, I might
be able to identify it for you via a tape recording or .wav file).
