Proposal for Shortened Ampico Roll Numbers
By Mike Walter

Hi folks, What is the purpose of shortening Ampico roll numbers?
I have yet to see that large a listing of Ampico or Duo-Art rolls on
the MMD, that one would even have any reason to do something like that.
If the factory chose to use a particular number, they must have had a
reason in mind!

One obvious disadvantage of using an abbreviated roll number is that it
would more than likely confuse anyone who just joined the MMD and had
not seen an abbreviation note. It would also make checking an Ampico
Catalog more difficult since some numbers are duplicated as it is!

For example, 67311 (F) in the Stoddard-Ampico series is "Barcarolle"
Op. 27, #1 by Moszkowski, played by Volavy. 67311 (H) in the Standard
Numbering System is in the "Polish National Dance" Op. 3, #1 by
Scharwenka, played by Volavy.

212001 in the Dated Number Classical Series is "The Blue Danube Blues"
played by Yeomans. 212001 in the Standard Number System is "Now I'm in
Love".

There's enough confusion in the numbering system already, that we
don't need to add to it. By the way, in the number of keystrokes that
I have used in this message, I could have written out 1,200+ complete
Ampico numbers, surely more than what is seen in this Digest since it's
inception!

Best wishes for the Holidays!

Mike Walter
