As usual, Nancy Fratti has some very good advice (990816 MMD).

I am presently repairing a large Mermond interchangeable box that
was shipped from North Carolina to New York.  The owner and shipper
arranged to have it placed in a large, custom made crate.

The top had a large warning on it, "This side up".  Unfortunately, the
man who nailed the top onto the crate, put the top on with the warning
on the _inside_, making it somewhat difficult for the handlers to read.
Of course, they dragged it all the way up here with the box upside
down.

The result?  The cylinder, which they had left in place, came loose
and broke the steel shaft on the governor and some other parts.  An
expensive lesson.  If they had followed Nancy's instructions, it
probably wouldn't have mattered.

I also must admit that I once violated Nancy's packing rule #2.  I let
a piece of bubble pack touch the newly polished, although apparently
'dried', top of a music box.  I then shipped it back to the owner
across the country.  Although it didn't actually stick to the finish,
thank God, it left a subtle, albeit attractive, optical highlight on
the mirror finish.  Oh, the wonders of chemistry.
