Unusual Piano Roll Format
By Jim Canavan

I came across a strange 88-note piano roll in a box of classical rolls
I found in my flea market haunts. The company is KASTER & Co., 34, 35,
& 36 Margaret St., Cavendish Square, London W. -- the brand is
KASTONOME. It seems to be a sort of Themodist take-off, since there are
instructions throughout for "KASTONOME ON/OFF." In order to play it on
my piano, I have to tape off the top three playing notes... there are
normal size perforations here (not snake bites), each about one note
long, that seem to trigger some sort of expression device. There is no
sustain pedal perf, but there are inked indications for using the
sustain pedal. The roll I have is K501 "Adelaide" Op. 46, B Flat by
Beethoven, and is a really wonderful, fun roll to play.

Any insights as to how this sytem worked, and what the 3 expression
perfs may have been capable of doing?
