Value of Gem Roller Organ
By Todd Augsburger

I did a double-take over the $3500.00 eBay listing of a plain Gem
Roller Organ (item number 3737775601), and since I saw it soon after it
was listed, I wrote a tactful email to the seller, suggesting that they
were unlikely to realize such a high price, as the most recent Gem sold
on eBay for less than $400.00. But I of course received no response.
It may be an honest mistake -- they're evidently a new eBay seller,
having sold no other items before.

But there _is_ bad information out there on the 'Net. For instance,
about once a year I write an email to the web site of the Carnegie Museum
at Roseville, CA, http://www.rosevillehistorical.org/Music-Room.htm
because they claim that they have a Concert Roller Organ made in 1865
(I assume they misread the 1885 patent date?), claim that they know of
only six in existence (I'm sure there are hundreds -- I own six myself!),
and claim it's worth $3,000.00 (it looks like a pretty common one,
probably worth about $600.00).

Does anyone have a contact there who might listen to reason? I've
just sent them _another_ email; perhaps this time I'll get a response.
