Rebuilding Lester Valves

Someone posted awhile back that they were thinking of leaving off
the furthest "outboard" collar on Lester stems, to allow for greater
wobble , and ease of shimming for travel.  Strangely, I had the very
same thought before even reading the posting.

Why not?  Anyone tried this, and had problems?   Success?
