Gaskets Under Pneumatics

Hi Listers!  In tearing into a 3-tier Standard stack the other day,
I was surprised to see a previous rebuilder had used thin pouch
leather under the striker pneumatics as a gasket.  It made the job
of getting the pneumatics off of the deck a true pleasure, with only
a small crack on the end of the putty knife with the heel of my hand
needed to separate the boards with none breaking!  What a pleasure!

I've always glued the pneumatics directly to the deck, but man, that
sure made things easy to disassemble.  Is this gasket method airtight
or is it truly unnecessary?
