Organizing Piano Rolls On Shelves
By Peter Heinesen

Hi Tom, First of all, forget about sorting rolls (boxes) by artist,
composer, etc. This is bound to give you trouble sooner or later.

The easiest way of organizing piano rolls is to give each roll an
individual, forthrunning [sequential] number (in database language this
is called an autonumber). This number you place in the database and at
the same time you place it on the roll box (preferably on the opposite
end of the label and on at glued separate label). Then simply put all
rolls on the shelves in ascending order.

You select your roll in the database and read the number of the roll
you want to hear. Then it is easy to collect the roll with the
corresponding number from the shelves. In the future you don't have to
rearrange the rolls as new accessed rolls simply are stored in the end
of the shelves.

I don't know whether the Jon Miller Piano Roll Data Base Program has
this feature incorporated, else you must take one of the fields and
use it to make this autonumber. I am using such a system, but has my
own database program developed in Microsoft Access.
