Building a Large Musical Box
By Sigurd Saue

As part of a landscape architecture project we are planning to build
one or two large musical boxes in a public park in Trondheim, Norway.
The instruments must be built for rough use and outdoor conditions,
but we hope to base them as much as possible on the mechanics of the
traditional musical boxes (either disk or cylinder).

The intent is to make a fairly large version of the traditional musical
box. The size could be approximately 50 cm meters [20 inches] across,
but that includes the necessary resonant structures. We have not
decided on whether we should use cylinder or disk (any input here is
appreciated). So far I have assumed that the bars should be plucked as
for small-scale musical boxes, but we need to investigate whether this
is realistic or not.

The instrument should not be self-playing -- anyone passing by should
be able to turn the cylinder/disk using some kind of one-way handle and
thereby produce the music.

We would of course like to have as much information as possible on how
to do this, and therefore we hope that someone on this digest could
suggest sources of information (literature), recent projects of a similar
kind, or links for further search.

Thanks in advance,
Sigurd Saue
