Making Simple Decals

Here is a novel method of making simple decals I have heard about.
Take a piece of water-adhesive paper tape, spray a good coat of clear
poly over the adhesive.  Print on that with your printer.  Then give
it another coat of clear poly, cut it out, and it is ready to use.
I haven't tried it; has anyone?
