Scanning 35 mm Photo Slides of Mechanical Music
By Jim Katz

I agree with the information from Joyce Brite. We have all probably
had the idea we would scan our slides from back in the old film days
and thereby keep our valued photos, but reality creeps in with a shock.
This is a huge undertaking, and needs to be planned with military
precision to produce a usable archive at the end.

Search software and other library tools should be in place from the
beginning. Hardware useful enough for more than a token effort is
tricky and expensive, and the process is an endless repeat.

Lastly, it needs to be done soon. By the time you get to many of the
slides in most collections, they have deteriorated, faded, changed
color, or become separated from their information. This should really
only be attempted by a library/archive set up for the purpose and with
a mandate and enthusiasm for preserving the treasures of the past that
are contained in the photos.

I hope you can find the magic combination, but it will be a rare thing.
I know all too many people who bought personal negative and slide
scanners in the 1990's with the idea of preserving their collections --
including me -- and not one carried through.
