Musical Box on the Science Channel
By Jonathan Herz

The Science Channel is airing a new series about the manufacture and
workings of everyday mechanisms. I wanted to let everyone know that
my musical boxes will be appearing in the episode airing on Thursday,
February 11th, at 10:00 PM.

A crew visited my shop last August and filmed the movement and
a few of my manufacturing processes. I have no idea what the piece
will feature; I hope it will mostly be accurate. They seemed very
interested in the power train and the tune change mechanism, so
I suspect that there will be a lot about gears and not so much about
music. The series emphasizes elaborate flythroughs of exploded 3D
renderings of machines.

There were a few interview questions for me, sounding, as far as
I can recall, not very articulate. The segment will last about eight
minutes. I hope it does a little bit to raise the profile of
mechanical music.
