Nyiregyhazi "Etude Transcendante" Roll Tempo
By Bob Taylor

Thanks to Robbie for the speedy response to my question concerning
the marked tempo on this wonderful roll. I was careful not to ask
any leading questions, but my suspicions were confirmed -- Harold
Powell was known to take liberties in changing the marked tempo.

Also, the Powell recut has a changed number, thus my inquiry for
roll 63704 resulted in a response for roll 63703. The last digit
in this particular numbering scheme relates to the roll size.
I was aware that the Elaine Obenchain Ampico catalog lists the
accurate number, 63703-H.

In listening to the Powell recut, I often felt that the marked
Tempo 90 was too slow. Most other Nyiregyhazi rolls that contain
equally flamboyant music are at tempo 100.

I am making a series of recordings of Nyiregyhazi rolls, and one or
two may become new YouTube presentations. Getting the tempo right
is an absolute must. Thanks for the help.
