756-3.jpg

756-4.jpg
Nº 756  A rare and very fine barrel organ 44 keys Gavioliflûte, with its two cylinders. Magnificent veneered case inlaid with boxwood stringing and foliage (very light scratches and splits on the side, and a small chip of wood on the right side), with a fine litho depicting a forest scenery in the middle, and in the lower part the mention : "Gavioliflûte, Gavioli et Cie Breveté SGDG & Patented, 14, rue d'Aligre, Paris". Height. 62 Width. 71 Depht. 38 cm. Inside the lid, two handwritten tunesheets of the 8 tunes of the 2 cylinders. Cylinders (in excellent condition) : long. 57 cm, diameter 18 cm. 44 keys playing on ca 76 wooden pipes. An exterior lever for the treble register. The No 2049 is printed in many places in the organ and on the cylinders. On both is sticked the Gavioli label, 3, rue de Citeaux, Paris. The alternate cylinder is housed in its own box.
The whole instrument seems to have been played very little, and its exceptionnal inside condition of freshness allows to think that, if there has been restorations (bellows, pipes), they have been made respectful of the original condition. The sound is rich and powerful, the notation is very good and dynamic, with a fine program (the quadrille in Offenbach's Orphée aux Enfers, The waltz in the Trovatore, etc.) which suggest this intrument could have been made as soon as the 1860's, and the two mentionned adresses are in favour of these dates. (A very similar instrument is yet described in a later Gavioli catalogue of the 1880's : "44 touches, effets de flûtes avec unisson, flageolets, tremblant, 8 airs"). It seems this instrument was bought in ca 1900 by an ancestor of the owner, who was fond of objects of art and collectibles.

Very small splits and worm damages on the left side of the table, otherwise very fine general condition, and apparently untouched. Out of tune. Only a very good restoration is advisable. Maker's handwritten signature on the cylinder, and maker's card on top of the table.
Very early XIXth c. The Marino Marini Museum, near Ravenna, has a similar instrument, but with straps for a man to carry it on his back. Actually, this type of small vertical cylinder piano was very popular in Europe, especially in ... England where the maker Hicks (Bristol) is said to have claimed being its inventor. It seems more probable that he copied an Italian model similar to the one we present here (see Ord-Hume, in his book "Pianola" (pp 51 sq). The National Museum of musical instruments in Rome has in its collections a guitar signed "Charles (sic) Godone, Torino, 1810".
