Ampico A/B Troubleshooting
By Terry Smythe

I have a 1935 George Steck Ampico A/B reproducing grand piano. It has a B stack, B drawer, a single A crescendo feeding both A expression units. It has no action/pump equalizers. The expression units are abbreviated, modified A units with no re-regulators.

The piano has been playing flawlessly for about 8-9 years since restoration. Recently, the treble expression cancel has stopped working. As dynamics levels increase on the treble side, they remain at that ever high level throughout the remainder of the performance.

I've completely checked over the treble expression unit and all functions appear to be working as they should, except cancel. I've exhausted the usual array of ideas, and am now reaching out to others in hopes someone can point me in the right direction.

Ideas, suggestions, tips, etc., would be very much appreciated.

Regards,

Terry

Life is like a piano; what you get out of it depends on how you play it.
