Perforatin' Blues
By Michael Waters

It's absolutely wonderful that modern technology is allowing us
to be able to record old rolls & new music as well onto computer
files and be able to place expression to the playing as well. The
question is will us ordinary folk who only have player pianos be
able to utilize these files, or will they be available to only
the wonderful people who have a computer connected to their player
piano? One thing that I have not seen covered since this group has
started is a modern method of producing rolls. I would like to see
if someone has done any work on using laser technology for roll
production. Old roll perforators were fantastic pieces of machinery
for the beginning of the century, and they still do an admirable
job. But isn't there another less cumbersome method that could
perforate paper, chain bridge and print words all at the same time? :)
Although I don't have the expertise or the funds to do the research
myself, it would be consoling to know that in 50 to 75 years that
my pianos will have some new rolls to play!
