"New" Reproducing Rolls
By Marc Sachnoff

Folks:

I've been curious about "new" reproducing rolls -- performances from the past 30 years or so that have been coded into the Ampico, Duo-Art or Welte schematics by enthusiasts long after the factories have closed.

I know that QRS carried a small line of reproducing rolls through the 1980s but can't recall if they were new performances or just recuts of old rolls. What happened to this service?

I'm also familiar with the new Upright and Grand series out of San Francisco (tho haven't bought any yet) and a John Arpin Ampico performance of the "St. Louis Blues" released by Rob Deland on his Bluestone label. How were these new performances coded? Has anyone ever catalogued these new releases? Have others been successful at creating contemporary music in the classic reproducing piano roll format? And does anyone have any duplicates of these rolls to sell/trade?

I'd appreciate any info fellow enthusiasts might have to share.

Thanks,

--Marc S.
