Dave raises an interesting consideration. In the 30 some odd years I've been involved in this fascinating avocation, I once acquired a true junker for the cost of shipping - a 1929 Weber Duo-Art 6' grand with shattered legs and a case badly eaten by rodents while the piano was sitting/stored in a grainary in Brattleboro, VT. Fortunately, the Duo-Art mechanism is complete and undamaged, which I removed down to the last nut, bolt and screw. The piano was not salvageable.
I've never been able to afford a Steinway Duo-Art, but have always hoped I might one day find a gutted Steinway into which I might be able to fit this mechanism. In the judgement of our more experienced rebuilders on-line, what is the probability of such wishful thinking? I still have the mechanism, untouched, patiently waiting for this elusive dream, some 18 years now. :-)
Should I continue with the dream, or relinquish the mechanism for the needy, rather than keeping it in the hands of the greedy?
Any thoughts?
