Music Roll Cataloging

In the Digest of May 7th, Glenn Thomas enquires about software for cataloging rolls. Glenn, I have a steam-age MacPlus at home and I use Microsoft Works c1990 for my rolls. I found it very easy to learn to use this program (although I don't use its spreadsheet or word processing capabilities at all) and maintain two major lists, one with about 1000 classical 88n rolls and one with about 400 Recordo rolls. From memory (I'm writing this at work) the categories or fields into which each roll is entered are Title, Composer, Opus No., Pianist (separate fields for surname and initial), Type (standard 88n, themed, etc), Make, Roll No., Roll Condition, Box Condition (usually "needs reinforcing"!), and Comments (like "incredibly dreary").
I find that it works well to sort the database first in alphabetical order of title, then in numerical order of opus number and finally in alphabetical order of composer. This yields a list with composers in alphabetical order, with a particular composer's works arranged in order of opus no., and with for instance Movt. 1 of Beethoven's Op. 33 No. 1 Sonata immediately in front of Movt. 2. My old Mac sorts all this out surprisingly swiftly.
